What can I use to make a clear and flat surface on a table top we made?

We made a coffee table top into an art piece using glass stones (round) and sea animals (flattened and glued to the wood) We are going to put grout around it to make it into a usable table but need a clear coat on top to make the table smooth. What can I use for the clear coat?

It is not as simple as putting glass over it as the surface now is not level or flat. I was thinking of possibly the clear stuff that can be used to make coasters or set artificial flowers in so the water looks clear all the time. I need some help here. Thanks.

  1. there is a self leveling epoxy they sell at paint stores,,,expensive though and you would need high edge on side to hold it.dries completely clear.

  2. Depending how uneven the surface is, glass might still work if you can find some of those little clear bumpers that are used under glass tabletops, if you can find ones the right size to keep the glass supported and more or less level. Perhaps you could even glue something to the tabletop to put the bumpers on, high enough so the glass would clear all the other stuff. Heavier glass would be best. Sounds cool.
