What can I use to tint latex paint?

I have some acrylic paints that my husband uses when he is painting (on canvas) and I was wondering if that can be used to tint latex based paint?

Yes, they can be used to tint paint with. I'm assuming that both are water based as acrylic and latex usually are. Artist-quality acrylic paints could be a little expensive to use for this but if you don't mind that, go ahead. The acrylic craft paints sold at craft stores work well too, though they probably don't contain as much pigment as artist paints so you might need more. Mix very well with either one, and it wouldn't hurt to dilute the art paint with water or a bit of the latex before adding it to the can of latex, to avoid having lumps of colour that don't mix well.
