I live on a small farm in Aus and there are heaps of rabbits. Me and Dad have gone hunting for them with dads gun but he is slack and cant ever be bothered shooting them for me. I skin them and give them to my dog for food. ( you know how it is these days with inflation, everything is so expensive. Trying to save money) I want a simple way of catching them so i dont have to shoot them but i dont want some high tech 100 piece rabbbit trap. Just something from around a farm backyard which the rabbit will go in when it is scared and cant come back out. I knew someone who had pvc pipe lying around which they go in but i tried that and it didnt work.

  1. I think chowder cheats by answering copy and pasting stuff from the internet because he had two extremely long answers so please don't vote him best answer even if you like the answer.

  2. In order to build a rabbit trap you need the following equipment:

    •  Plywood or any other boards that are at least 7 inches wide and ½ thick ( maximum )

    •  A hammer

    •  Finishing nails or any other nails that are close to that size

    •  Measuring tape

    •  A stick that forks out in a “ Y ” that is ¾ longer than its thickness

    •  1 straight stick that is 19 inches long and is also smaller than ¼ of its thickness

    •  1 straight stick that is 11 inches long and is also smaller than ¼ of its thickness

    •  An old stool leg or something close to that size

    •  Chicken wire or any other kind of wire that doesn’t have more than 1 inch gap in the holes

    •  A drill with a bit that is at least ¼ inches wide

After you have all of the above mentioned, follow these simple steps:

    •  The very first thing you must do is to cut 3 boards/sheets of plywood that are 28 inches long and 7 inches wide. One of them goes on the bottom while the other two will stand up on top of the bottom one. These boards/sheets of plywood must be flushed. Nail them together.

    •  Cut another board/sheet of plywood with the following measurements: 26 inches long and 7 inches wide. You will place it on the top of the sides. Push one end back until it is flush with the back of the sides. You should now have a 2 inch gap from the front of the sides to the front of the top.

    •  Cut another board/sheet of plywood that has a length of 9 inches. This will be the door of the rabbit trap. Cut it width wise so that there will be at least ¼ inches of space between the sides. Set it down because you will use it later.

    •  Get the wire and put it over the back so that there’s 1 inch overhang on the top, bottom and the sides. Next thing to do is to nail it so that it will be tight over the back. Afterwards, drive the nails so that they won’t go through the top, bottoms and the sides. After that, knock the rest of the nail over the side.

    •  Measure into the bottom board at the front ½ inches from the side and mark it. Put a nail in that place so that it will stick up at least 1 inch and will lean slightly outwards. Do the exact same thing on the other side.

    •  Get the old stool leg and drill a hole that will go through each side of it into the side of the trap. Afterwards, nail it to the front of the trap onto of the sides. You must have a gap that is far enough from the top of the board to your stool leg so that the door will fit through it.

    •  Drill a hole at 6 1/2 inches from the top of the board and make sure it is centered.

    •  Drill one more hole at 13 inches from the top of the board and also make sure that it is centered.

    •  The first hole you have drilled is the hole for the “ Y ” stick. Shave the straight end so that it will fit in the hole tight.

    •  The second hole you have drilled is for the trigger. Get the stick that is 11 inches long and measure down from the top of it so that when you look inside the front of the trap, it will stick down and almost touches approximately 1 inch from the bottom. While you hold the stick, reach in the trap and mark the top of it where it hits the bottom of you top board. Carve into your stick with a knife or other similar object at approximately half way. Afterwards, slowly come back out about 1 inch up.

    •  Get the door and stand it up on a vertical position. Afterwards, measure and find the center. Mark it and measure ¼ inches to the right and mark it from the center mark. Do the exact same thing on the other side.

    •  Nail a finishing nail at about half of the way and bend it over to the other mark. Remember not to nail on the center mark, nor bend the nail.

    •  Put the string on the nail on the door and tie it. Afterwards, put the trap door in its slot and pull it up until the bottom of it will hang down at about 1 inch from the top of the board. Get the 19 inches stick and hold it on your “ Y “ stick so that one end is right over your second hole and your trap door. If unfortunately you stick it too short you must find another one that will fit. Tie the door’s strings to your 19 inches stick.

    •  Get the 11 inches stick and insert it into the second hole from the front. Insert it into the hole so that the carve you made will hang on the top board. It should be standing almost in a vertical position. Get the 19 inches stick that sits on the “ Y “ and get it so that the front door’s bottom will hang down at about 1 inch from the top board. While you are holding the 19 inch stick on the “ Y “ in the same place, and also holding the 11 inch stick in its place, tie them together using a string.

    •  Set it so that the 11 inch stick will hang at the top of the board in its hole. If the bottom of the door isn’t hanging down at approximately 1 inch from the top door you must adjust the strings. Set it and push the 11 inch stick in. By now, the trap door should have closed all the way.

All things considered, building a rabbit trap isn’t a very difficult thing to do but it requires attention and time. If you find these steps hard to follow, you always have the alternative to purchase a rabbit trap from the shop.
