Question:

What can a beginner knit with cotton yarn?

I just started learning how to knit, and picked up some of the Handicrafter Cotton yarn on sale, and am wondering what I can knit with it? I've made some bean bags for the kids, and don't really need more dishcloths.

Can I do a scarf, or is cotton not a good choice for that?

  1. How much did you get? You could make a baby sweater. I agree that a scarf is not a great idea.

  2. How about place mats. Or look on line for more ideas.

  3. you can do scarves, dresser mats, place mats, caps, pot holders, hot pot mats. lots of things.

  4. Yes, Handicrafter Cotton isn't especially good for clothing of any sort, other than perhaps some slippers, it's rather rough in the wearing.  Curtains comes to mind, and the other suggestions you've gotten are good.  Doubled you could make a rug with it, coffee mats, coasters, table runners.

  5. here is a free pattern link for you to look at.

  6. You could do a scarf, but cotton doesn't drape well.  It would just kind of sit on your shoulders and stretch out. You could try an ipod sock or a phone cover.

  7. Baby hats.

the book Knitting for Peace has a good pattern from Chemo Caps that can be adjusted for baby size, or you could do the umbilical cord hat from Stitch NBitch.

Oh! you also could knit toys. Like "piggy in my pocket" by Judy Kits. google "knit toys" and see what you find.
