Question:

What can an out of state DMV do to me?

I live in Minnesota. 20 months ago lent my car to a friend and he drove through Illinois and used their Open highway toll system. My car obviously didn't have a transponder. Last week I got a bill for 5 missed tolls. Included was a picture of my license plate. I think it's silly they waited 20 months to bill me and I don't want to pay because I was driving. Since I'm not a resident of Illinois, nothing will happen if I don't pay it right? Thanks.

  1. I'm not 100% but some states will put a hold on your license so when you move or need to change your dmv info or renew you cant it happened to me in nc from a nj ticket

  2. Well, they can issue you a temporary Illinois driver licence.  Then they can suspend it.  That suspends your licence in every state in the Union, all territories, and all Canadian provinces and territories.  When that happens, you will not be able to renew your Minnesota licence.

    If you happen to drive into Illinois for any reason before that happens, you can find yourself enjoying a deluxe suite with chrome toilet and sink beside the bed in the Crowbar Hotel until you pay the bill.

    You are responsible for your vehicle.  Pay the bill, and collect from your friend, it will save you trouble in the future.

  3. They will hold you responsible. Your license will probably be suspended. States exchange information like this everyday so it will catch up with you. Get ready to take the bus and thank your friend for this.

  4. If you don't pay they can take you to court for it, they can also revoke your driving privledges in the state.   They are just that privledges.  I would see about getting your friend to pay you for his tickets.  Your car your tickets, unfortunately.

  5. You are responsible;

    This is from the Illinois tollway site, FAQ:  Someone else was driving my car and did not pay – do I have to pay for the violations?

    Under Illinois law, as the registered owner of the vehicle, you are liable for any toll violation, regardless of whether you were in the car at the time the toll violation was recorded.
