  1. When in doubt, quote something that means a lot to you. Whether it be song, the Bible, a comedian, a movie, a famous poem, etc. I've have heard and used this method in many writings I've done and it seems to get the point across more than something I come up with.

A good example would be Avenged Sevenfold's "Gunslinger". However, because it talks from the side of the soldier, just switch it around like so.

    Real song lyrics:

"With all that we've been through, it don't matter when I'm coming home to you."

    Random, quick idea I had

"With all that we've been through, I'll be sitting at home waiting for you."

Another part of the song...real lyrics:

"I've reached towards the sky, I've said my goodbyes. My heart's always with you now"

    To something from your side

"You've reached towards the sky, you've said your goodbyes. My heart's always with you."

That's just one example. There's dozens....no hundreds of other examples you can use. Just use your imagination and figure out something that reaches out to you that you can use to show your friend how much you care. When I went to Iraq my first time, I had many poems with the same method used above and it showed how much effort my friends put into it.

Hope it helps, and good luck to you friend. It's rough over there sometimes.
