Question:

What can be done about inappropriately placed questions in Special Education?

There is currently a Suggestion on the Forum titled Misuse of the Special Education Category. Do you think it will help get Yahoo's attention if more people add comments to the suggestion? I know that topic has been addressed over and over again, so maybe I am just a wishful thinker...

  1. I am new to Yahoo Answers and find the special education area  very misused!  It's very annoying!!  Is it something that can be fixed?  How can I help?  How do I give it stars?

  2. The problem is getting worse--I am doubtful anything will change-

some questions I can see how they were mistakenly placed in this section----if it was just those it woudldn't be an issue-but the vast majority are obviosuly from India asking about higher education and testing-

it is very annoying when only a few questions per page relate to special ed or anything remotely related..

some areas do consider gifted and talented/English as a second language special ed-----

it would help if Yahoo didn't suggest the special ed category to every question that has teh word 'special' in it--and also filter out the questions from india-they could make teh software pick up on certain terms from teh India questions and suggest the higher ed category

  3. I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who is frustrated by the misuse of the sped section!  Almost half of the questions have nothing to do with special education.  I'm not sure if there is a way that Yahoo can screen/block/redirect questions that do not fit here.  I think if we keep bringing the issue up, maybe it will get some attention.

  4. I agree. I came to this section to answer questions about Gifted and Talented programs but all I see are questions that can be better addressed in the general education forum.

  5. It would help if this category were subfiled under people with disabilities. This would instantly deter the 'other' people from posting their spam here.

And then people only interested in only discussing the education of people with disabilities could be left alone.

  6. You are right that the Special Education Category need a drastic clean up. I also support that every body who is interested in this, will answer your question and give it a star as an interesting question. Besides that it is good that more people state their interest in this clean up. Now on the other side, I do not know if it is possible for the YA team to do that now. It should mean to bring all the misplaced questions to the right category [almost impossible without a lot of manpower] or

have a possibility to return the question to the questioner and tell the questioner that it is in the wrong category and suggest to change the category [less work but still a lot of manpower needed] or

put under each question a drop box with the categories, where the YA forum participants can suggest to move the question to which category, where  5 "complains" lead to move to the category Miscellaneous or the category that is chosen by 5  participants [no manpower but need a change in the program and the numbers are arbitrary] or

    in the meantime

we can now answer all these questions with

probably WRONG CATEGORY please submit your question again to the category:...............

and do not give an answer to the question itself.

I do not think that a person that is putting up a question in this or another wrong category is doing that on purpose, but do not understand / has no experience with the term Special Education or the category they use. And by no means I like to discourage people to ask their questions. That is worse than putting a question in the wrong category
