i've inherited my late grandpa's violin and while it sounds awesome it went through quite a few years of not so kind treatment and the top of it has a few scratches and some red c**p embedded in wood. what can be done to improve its appearance? of course i wouldn't try to do anything myself but i want to know if its possible to maybe sand it down and re-varnish it or something without damaging it further?

  2. Haha somebody stabbed my violin during orchestra once. I almost cried...

It can be revarnished, the fingerboard can be replaced, the pegs can be replaced, you can get a new set of strings. A lot of things can be done.

  3. take it to a professional if u do it urself u may further damage it. besides taking it to a luthier wud probably be easier than doing it urself. u dont wanna break ur late grandpa's violin so take it to a pro. good luck .........
