What can be done to improve Luton town centre?

I've ended up living in Luton. And don't get me wrong, there are some good things here. It's a very multi-cultural place. There are loads of Asian, Black, Oriental, Italian folks etc. which makes it vibrant and, for instance, makes it a really good town for food etc. And also the local folks are friendly, which is very important.

BUT...it is also the most spectacularly ugly town I have ever seen. Even worse than the likes of Scunthorpe, Sunderland and Walsall.

There's only one building in the town centre with any architectural merit, the Town Hall. The rest is just a clumsy hotch-potch of sixties monstrosities, an awful hulking 80s shopping centre which over-dominates everything, and some really scruffy old buildings. None of it gels together and it just looks awful.

So what could be done?

Why don't the town council just get a really good architect in and,as far as budget allows, knock down as much of it as possible and start again?

Have you got any ideas for improving it?

  1. Move it to Los Angeles.

  2. Some sort of nuclear device?

  3. Flatten it & start again

  4. Nuke it. I grew up there and it is a hole I never return to unless I *really* have to.
