Ok, im planning to travel to canada.

I want to visit Toronto, montreal, the niagara falls and finally a long trip to vancouver.

I plan to do this in 2 weeks in august with a budget of 1600 dollars (plain tickets not included).

Is this enough budget? is it more than i need? what would be a good budget for this traveling. I want to do at least those things, anything else is optional.

  1. coming here to Canada for 2 weeks is going to cost you way more than $1600...especially if you have to rent a car, hotel ect.  I would say double that....if you want to do everything you said above.

  2. You can definately do Canada on $1600. Just look into staying in hostels which are safe, clean and really fun for meeting people. Meals in Canada are cheap. Travelling out to Vancouver can be expensive though. But most tourist spots in Canada are either free or cheap so that's a plus.

  3. Estimate AT LEAST $100 per day for hotel, $50 per day for car rental, and $40 per day for food. Based on this, I think you need about $2800 for your trip, excluding flights. You could save a bit of money using public transit and buying food at the supermarket instead of always going to a restaurant.

On top of that, add any souvenirs you plan to buy, batteries for the camera, admission fees to any parks, landmarks, museums, etc.

Montreal is a six hour drive away from Toronto, not sure if you are driving or flying between the two, but expect to lose one day there for travel time. Niagara Falls is an hour or two from Toronto, so that is not much of a problem. Vancouver is a five hour flight from the east coast so expect to lose another travel day there.

August in Montreal is when we have a lot of festivals, and so hotel prices generally go up. Niagara Falls hotels are very pricy, especially ones with views of the falls, so expect to pay double or triple the costs there.

You can probably find youth hostels or cheaper motels outside of the main city core areas, so shop around.

  4. Have you figured in transportation to and from all these sites? What about hotel, food, souvenirs and any unexpected costs. And you need to figure out what the difference in money is then you will know if you need to bring more or less. I would say err on the side of caution and always bring more than you think you need.

  5. Remember that the Canadian dollar is at par or worth more than the US dollar these days.

  6. Well, $1600 gives you approximately $110 a day to play with.  The big question is whether all of your travel is outside of this budget, and are you flying from Toronto to Montreal, and back to get to Niagara Falls, and is that expense outside of the $1600?  And you must be flying to Vancouver to do all of that in a two week period.

With $110 a day, you will not be able to stay at most hotels or motels or even B&B's, and also have money for food and events.  So you need to consider hostels, and you may need to plan to buy most of your food at grocery stores and markets, which is quite possible at that time of year.  You need to look for hostels in the four cities you plan to visit, and plan to stay there most of the time.  I think the going rate for hostels will be about $20 to $25 per night.

Often some university residences are open as hostels to travellers in the summer.  Public transportation is possible for TO, Montreal and Vancouver for sure - I am not sure what is possible in the Niagara Falls area.  It is possible to travel with a bicycle if you like to use one - you can take it on your flights as baggage, and then use it at each of the locations, so you may want to think about that option.

I have included some links for hostels in case you want to use them.  They are often a very economical option, and will allow you to get much more enjoyment from your $1600.

    Have fun.
