Question:

What can be recycled?

I'm setting up my home recycling center, and a lot of things are fairly obvious for what my recycling center accepts - cardboard, paper, plastic, and glass - but somethings I'm confused about.

For example, can I recycle the cellophane wrapping off of some packages under plastic? If I remove the labels from water or pop bottles before putting them in the plastic, can I recycle those also?

Any deviations or issues you can tell me about that you've experienced would be appreciated.

  3. Every town has its own recycling procedures. Request a guide from recycling center of town hall.

Some supermarkets recycle egg cartons, plastic and paper grocery bags. You can add similar weight plastic film (dry cleaning bags) to the grocery plastic.

Almost all recycling centers require clean bottles and cans. Processors pay more (charge less) for a "clean load).

Not all plastic and glass is recyclable. Check the guide.

  4. It depends on your locality. Landfills are required to take in recycle items. Most only do certain items because it brings in money. We live near no less than 10 landfills in a 50sq. mile area. The closest landfill does not take that many kinds of items to be recycled so in order to be dutiful we take them to another landfill that does and drop off aluminum at a scrap place that pays for it, so it's not a total wasted trip. We only do this once or twice a year.

Living in a semi-rural area helps too, because farmers ask for newspapers and whatnot for bedding. People also put out unwanted

items on the curb that are still good and put a free sign on it.

Getting back to your question. Most landfills want aluminum. Newspapers, clear glass,#1 and #2 clear plastics and bi-metal are the basics as well as cardboard boxes that have been flattened. Here's a green link for ya:http://google.nationalgeographic.com/sea...

Also check with your recycling agent, what they take sometimes varies month to month(whatever is profitable at the time.) Hope this all has helped.
