  1. The biggest problem is the knowledge of the EDUCATION SYSTEM. Knowledge of the area is probably really not an issue. It is the other background things you do in an  education degree that they lack. The STUDENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE is one that can not be overlooked.

  2. First of all just because you have the knowledge of a subject does not mean you know how to teach. Teachers are experts not only on the subjects they teach but on how people learn. If you don't understand the theories and science behind how people learn you may run into trouble teaching. In addition to this there is a reason education majors take methods classes and learn the most powerful way to teach their subjects and how to avoid simply lecturing because that is what they were exposed to. In addition, if the person trying to teach has not taken classroom management then most of his/her day may be lost to classroom management problems rather than spent on the task of teaching. Non education majors may also not be aware of how to spot problems like learning disabilities or how to help once they have been found. The idea that anyone can teach is one of the reasons why teachers continue to be paid so little when they put in 60 or more hours a week and then still work 2nd jobs to make ends meet. It is a labor of love and the rewards are often intrinsic. If the non education major does not realize this they may burn out fast.
