  1. Rent a large roto hammer, drill several holes in a line, then use a large sledge hammer at least 20# and hit it hard.  If you have a taper plug that will fit the hole, the fracture may be easier.

  2. A ROCK HAMMER, GOGGLES, COBALT CHISEL AND A 2LB REGULAR SLEDGE TYPE HAMMER. http://www.amazon.com/AMERICAN-SCIENCE-S...

  3. I agree with Mr. Jones, and suggest a couple additional things.

First of all, you might consider using some finesse in creating the "BOWL"/ slight depression, if that's your intent. Once, and if you can accomplish that, you should consider that a mortar and pestal are usually smooth, hence some of your planning should include some kind of grinding or polishing the surface eventually used to grind rice.

    Just my two "sense"

  4. Jack hammer (be sure to wear ear plugs & eye protection.

  5. We break fossils in half by drilling several small holes in a line. Filling with water and freezing during the winter. If you live where you don't have freezing temps you could freeze it with some Co2 from a fire extinguisher.

  6. Pretend you are on the chain gang and beat the h**l out of it with a sledge hammer.
