What can cause an atom to become unstable, and how can it be made stable again?

  1. actually the nucleus stable is bound by strong nuclear forces.

    these nuclear forces act irrespective of the charges between the particles.

    These nuclear forces balance the electrostatic repulsion in any nucleus.

    when the no of protons is very high then so the electrostatic repulsions. to balance this if the nuclear force is not sufficient enough then the atom will become unstable.

    the atom then gets balanced through the conversion of some of the protons into neutrons by galloping one of the outer electron to convert itself into a neutron.

    If neutrons become too much then they convert themselves into protons by beta decay.


  2. An unstable atom is radioactive.  It has an imbalance in the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.  If it decays radioactively, it eventually becomes stable.
