What can cops do if there is a locked safe in the car?

I'm just asking out of curiosity but what if somebody had something illegal in the car but it was locked up in a safe that was also in the car? Can a cop do anything about that?

If the cop got your permission to search your car, or, if the officer had reasonable cause to suspect you had contraband in the vehicle, or, if the cop had a warrant to search your car, then he could compel you to open the safe, or, have the car impounded into a police yard or garage to have the safe forced open.

Think about it this way.  What is the difference between a locked safe, and the locked trunk of your car?  Or the glove compartment?

No then cannot do anything unless you give them a reason then they would need to either ask you for your permission or just get a search warrant but at the same time they will need a very good reason for doing this.

i don't think so but they'll probably call one of those dogs that look for illegal drugs

assuming a cop suspects you have something illegal in the safe, he can have it blown apart, But they have to have reasonable proof first. Hearsay would not be good enough reason.

Why would someone have a safe in their car? Surely nothing you regularly carry aroung in your car needs the security of a safe, right? Unless you regularly carry highly valuable objects(probably stolen jewellery or guns), or illegal substaces(fireworks, drugs)... That in itself is enough for a cop to hold you under suspicion, if you refuse to open the safe when asked, until the vice K9 units show up and have a sniff around.
