  1. It's your policy number and nothing more.

  2. You heard wrong.  They can't tell anything.

  3. For automobile insurance the obvious way to get a low quote is do a policy comparison on auto policies. Make certain that you pick similar policies with the same deductibles, car model, zip code, etc so that all options are a good comparison.

What I most often recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.lowratetoday.com since they have discount insurers and can give many prices on auto insurance polices.

  4. It is hard to say. You have to check it out yourself.here is some useful information for your question might be helpful.

  5. Your policy number. Nothing.

  6. They match the VIN and license plate of your car to what is on the paperwork to verify that it is for your car.  They also check the expiration date to be sure that you are currently insured.  I believe that's it...

  7. You policy number is just your policy number, as assigned by your insurance company.  It has no secret meaning, and conveys no personal information to the polic or any body else, except an authorized representative of the insurance company.  As a matter of fact, in my office, I couldn't look up anything with your auto policy number, I needed your customer number, or your driver licence number.  Failing that, with other identification, I could get your number from Broker Services provided you had other photo id.  Your policy need not have been brokered by our office.

Now home insurance was different.  I could look up your information with your policy number, but only if our office, or our sister office was the the broker for that policy.

Different states/provinces have different rules, but nowhere do the police have the ability to decipher any policy or personal information from that policy number.
