whenever my toddler hurts himself or has an accident i always either call the nhs direct or take him to the hospital and there have been quiet a few of these occasions as my toddler is really naughty..i had a call from my health visitor telling me that the hospital wrote to her about the most recent event...what does this mean? does it mean that social services can get involved and that my child can be taken away from me? i am a good mother and give my child the best that i can and i always try to keep him out of danger but we all know how kids are and sometimes they are smarter than us! someone reassure me please..thanks a lot in advance.

  1. my rule of thumb..

IF IT IS NOT BROKEN , BLEEDING , OR IN NEED OF STICHES, then they are fine  and a band aid is all you need....

now the big kids tell the little ones this, give kisses and get the band-aids... lol...

we are as parents protective of our children .. but when you go to the er for everything, then yes, they will begin to question everything.....

save the er trips for anything that is BROKEN, BLEEDING, OR IN NEED OF STICHES...  or if they have a seriaus allergic reaction to a bee sting, things like that...

  2. it's a matte of course.  the hospital will inform the health visitor if the frequency/ nature of the injury raises any concerns. What should happen is the health visitor will probably come and see you and talk about the injuries, with a view to ensuring he is safe. just explain he is active/ adventurous and show that you do all you can to protect him, eg put up stair gates, remove dangerous objects (ie heavy things he can pull over, no pens shapr things around etc), that you've ensured the locks are secure and safe - you know display an active awareness of his environment and that you've thought about the things that could harm him and you've taken steps to minimise the risk.

They want to make sure they're accidents and not things that could be avoided. The health visitor wants to help you and your son.

Social Servies could get involved if they think he is having accidents which are avoidable, they will want to monitor to make sure he's safe.

they don't want to take kids away they want him to be safe.

if your health visitor didn't say she wants to see you she may not at this point, but maybe it's on her radar if he has another.

and by the way, children are not naughty, they just play and play.

perhaps you could give him active playtimes to give him something to get involved in, bored kids always create their own mischief.

    hope you're all ok

  3. What kind of "hurts himself" do you mean? If it's a lot of 911 calls for an ambulance, they might suspect that you're abusing him.

  4. Well, what sort of accidents are you taking him to hospital for? My (perfectly normal, perfectly active, had lots of normal childhood accidents) son has NEVER been taken to hospital. My daughter's been five times, almost all associated with ice skating accidents. They are eight and twelve years old.

Seeking medical attention repeatedly for really minor things is completely unnecessary and will raise warning flags about you - not necessarily your care of your child, but why you feel the need to keep seeking medical help for every single incident. Next time, stop and think. Are you actually concerned about this bump or scrape, or are you in fact completely sure that the nurses will just wash it and put on a plaster? If so, he doesn't need taking to hospital. Bumps and bruises are a normal part of growing up. You need to try not to be so paranoid, it's not good for either you or your son.
