So I'll be in mexico for a few weeks and I've read that there is a limit to stuff you can bring: something like $400 worth of personal goods; But does that mean I cannot bring a laptop ($1200) and a PS3 ($500) across for personal use?

  1. You are permitted One of almost any personal devices.

If you take your laptop they will not be interested .  If you take two laptops for example you may have some "Splainin " to do.

If you have 5 laptops you would have to declare them on the forms given to you on the plane.

Sounds like you are a tourist and the same applies by land and will will search a little more for guns and the like at the border.

What you are doing and taking , if you are Guatemalen , Canadian or American is perfectly legal

  2. Unless you prepare ahead, you may have difficulty bringing computers or  other expensive electronic equipment into Mexico for your personal use.

To prevent being charged an import tax, write a statement about your intention to use the equipment for personal use and to remove it from Mexico when you leave.  Have this statement signed and certified at a Mexican consulate in the United States and present it to Mexican customs as you enter Mexico.

  3. a laptop wont raise flags but avoid bringing in things that could be resold....that's what they are looking for.  i brought a desktop computer w/ HUGE analog monitor and my laptop in my car into Coahuila from Nuevo Leon and they noticed and asked about it...but let me thru the state police checkpoint. I told them it was a gift for my wife's family...and it was. but, they could ve been jerks if they wanted to...   you're probably ok but there is always the chance that someone will hassle you unless you declare it.
