What can i bring on the plane?

can i bring a purse and a laptop (in a case) onto the plane or can i bring only one?

you can bring both. You can have a purse and one other carry on.

I have brought both on board before. I wouldn't feel safe putting my laptop in my suitcase what with them all going missing these days!!

Both.  You will be asked to take the computer out of the case when you go through security.  You can go to the TSA website to see their regulations.

From some UK airports you can only carry 1 piece of hand baggage (London Gatwick for example is one) whereas London Heathrow allows normal hand luggage within the specified size limits, and a woman can also carry a handbag (purse).

Be aware of this if you are coming to Europe because of your return flight.
