Try a mason drill. This is a special drill-bit designed to drill into stone without breaking.

Use a rotary hammer and a chisel bit, which you can get at a rental yard.  Set it to hammer only (no rotation) and hammer away.  It will split.  Good luck.

Rent a roto hammer, a hammer drill is a toy for what you need to do. A series of holes along the fracture line that is desired will be the fastest. The holes should be a few inches apart and several inches deep.  If possible, build a large fire on the rock to heat it and then put cold water on the holes.  The rock should break along the hole line. It depends on how large the rock is if it will break on the first try.  If you have cold nights, fill the holes with water and freeze the water. The rock will break.

  If these choices do not apply to your situation, the drill more holes and use the hammer setting on the power unit.  As a last resort, hire a jack hammer or a contractor to do the job.
