Question:

What can i do about aggressive unleashed dogs trying to go after my dog?

i feel like i can't walk my dog without getting chased by unleashed dogs. this has happened four times, five including an incident where a woman was walking her german shepherd which attacked my dog.

i am very fearful when a dog comes running after my pomeranian. usually what happens is i see an unleashed dog come running out of nowhere and their owner attempting to get it while i or my sister is dodging our dog then running when we can. then the owner comes to our house saying sorry and asking if we and the dog are okay. i also always end up with the feeling like i have to throw up.

it happened again today, and i ended up letting go of my dog since i was so scared and had to chase it. i didn't even see the owners try to stop it, nor did they come to apologize.

so i'm wondering, how can i avoid the situation, because i think it's just not right having to run away from dogs that look like they'll attack my dog, when my dog doesn't hurt any other dogs.

  1. Aside from reporting the loose dogs to your local law enforcement, purchase a sprayer of either mace or pepper spray. When the dogs approach in a menacing manner, spray them in the face. Sure it will sting, but the damage isn't permanent and it will get the message across that you and your dog aren't to be messed with.

  2. take them to court the unleash dogs owners.

  3. Call animal control....

Until this situation is taken care of take a different rout. Don't put your dogs or yourself in danger.

  4. wow...these people are running the risk of being sued. if you (or your sister, your dog, or anyone else) are attacked, then you definately have grounds for a legal issue, i think. if you are within city limits, there is a leash law that has to be obeyed. to avoid any horrible things that happen you may want to get your mom or dad (or whoever) and go and talk to the neighbors about their dogs being off leash.

  5. 1st off do not run from dogs, they will chase you. 2nd water in a spray bottle may dicourage some dogs from coming after you. The biggest challenge for you is to find out what your local laws are. Unless, you are out in the country most cities have ordinances against dogs running freely unattened. If so then have the animal control officer take a closer look at your neighborhood or come on a walk with you. Lazy dog owners need to become more responsible for their pets. If you do not have an animal control officer then call your Police and make them do their job. A few citations will get the neighbors off their rear ends.

  6. These other dogs should not be running around loose like that! Sounds like their owners have no control over them or just don't care! If you know who these dogs belong to, and you feel safe doing this, then II would talk to the owners and tell them how you feel and that if it happens again that their dogs are running loose, that you will call Animal Control and report it. You should not have to live in fear of walking your dog, in your own neighborhood. Hopefully, when you mention calling Animal Control, they will take responsibility and confine their dogs, or keep them on a leash  when they are outside!

  7. Carry a BB gun or a baseball bat on your walks, and use it when you have to. The other dogs will eventually learn, or die before they can. Either way, you and your dog will be safe.

  8. contact animal services in town-listed in the blue pages- and the police (not 911 unless attacked)  and report the problem. Dont let your dog run free because it gives the other dogs cause to run it down. I would carry Mace and  lightly spray any dog that came near you. If you see any owners beforehand, warn them you are carrying Mace and will use it so they better tie up their dogs. Can you walk him in another neighborhood or block? Call Animal Services- theyll drive around and pick up loose dogs.

  9. If your community has a leash law, start by telling the authorities about the loose dogs.

If it comes down to defending yourself or your dog from a dangerous attack, I recommend pepper spray.

  10. take an umbrella when a dog is coming after you pick up your dog and open the umbrella in its face it will scare the dog and keep the umbrella between you and the other dog in till you can get to your house. and never run that only makes the dog want to chase you even more, remember is a game to them.
