What can i do about dog's dry skin?

the patch on my dogs leg where it got shaven for surgery is looking all dry and flaky, what can i do about it?

Dear Sab,You mentioned "dryness in surgical area, this would be a normal reaction. Trama to area reduces blood flow to same. If there are no subdermal sutures you can try GENTEL massage to increase blood flow but confirm with Vet. I would check other areas of skin and coat to see if condition is sim.If a dandruff flakey type skin is found it could be indicitive of internal parasites. If unsure,take a stoole sample back to Vet. Takes 30 sec. to confirm.On the dry skin, Expensive canine shampoos remind me of people who spend lots of time and $$$ waxing an automobile. If they would realize that it's what goes in the engine should be top priority,performance would increase.Dry skin can be taken care of by simple diet modifications,adding a fish,flaxseed and borage cap everyday can sometimes work well.Go to WalMart/KMart in the vtamin section.Same as canines only 1/2 the price.Swithing to a higher protein food can also help. If pet is under 2 years old I recomend Iams smart puppy. put some aloe lotion on it and give your dog Omega3 capsules in his food.

Use a good moisturizing shampoo and also try cod liver oil pills.  Works wonders.

My vet recommended a mint infused soapless shampoo (not too expnsive) and fish oil mixed with his food. He said eggs are also great for healthy skin and a healthy coat.
