  1. Go from Hahn to Idar-Oberstein - it's a town full of jewelry shops about 40 kilometers (30 miles) from the airport. (actually two towns, but you can't tell where one ends and the other begins)

There are restaurants, a church in the side of the mountain face that you can climb to, and other sights there.  At Hahn itself, not much.

  2. I was stationed at Hahn before they closed it and turned it into an airport. It IS in the middle of no whereand at least an hours drive to Frankfurt! The region it is in is all farmland and if all you have is 15 hours go get some schnitzel and beer! If you are flying into the main airport in Frankfurt then that is a different story all together as there is a lot to do in Frankfurt.

  3. From 1963-1967 I was a member of the USAF stationed at HAHN  Air Force Base in the 50th Air Police sqdn.

It was a Tactical Fighter base with Mace missle sites.

From what I understand it was closed. After your visit send me an e-mail and let me know what it's like now.

  4. OK, less than an hour east of Hahn is Ruedesheim (see: http://www.ruedesheim.de/) which is a wonderful little tourist town on the Rhein, which is small enough to enjoy on foot. It grows some of the best wines in Germany, is very scenic, and offers half-day and day cruises along the Rhein. The "Drosselgasse" is a pedestrian street filled with wine bars, beer, food and shopping. I also recommend an hour or two at Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum, (www.siegfrieds-musikkabinett.de/) which has hundreds of old self-playing instruments - truly unique! Walking through the vineyards above the town is very relaxing and the views are awesome.

  5. I'm assuming you misspelled it and mean Hahn not Hahan.  That airport is about an hour and a half or two from the actual city of Frankfurt and is the base of Ryanair.  Most international flights are in and out of Frankfurt International which is a completely different airport and MUCH closer to Frankfurt.  The one in Hahn is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere.  It used to be an American Air Force base.  There is a bus which would take you to the Frankfurt Internaional Airport and then you could actually go to Frankfurt on the subway (tube).  It would take you about two hours both ways so then you would still have 10 or 11 hours to see Frankfurt.  Around Hahn there are a few restaurants but not much.  I think it would be an extremely boring place to hang around for that long.  If your friend has a car you could also drive to Mainz which is also in the area and a really nice town.

  6. in Germany??? DRINK BEER OF COARSE!!

  7. I would give you one more choice, Mainz, the capital of state of Rhineland-Palatinate which is located on the river Rhine. You can visit the old tawn and the cathedral that survive the WW2 or visit many museum here. You can enjoy your time having lunch or dinner with German beer in town too.

Mainz is not far from Hahn Airport. It takes less than 1 hour from Hahn Airport by Bus (10Euro for one way trip) plus there is a bus Hahn Airport - Mainz every hour, as I supposed you don't have much choice for transportation (There's no train station near Hahn Airport).

The bus shuttle is next to Hahn airport, just follow the sign or ask staffs there(2-5min walk from the departure gate). The bas will stop at the Main station of Mainz, from here you can walk to the old city.

PS: Great Italien Icecream at Mainz main station ;)
