im 18 and from st.lucia, the guy that im engaged to is in dominican republic hes works hard everyday saving up enough money for the requirements to come to america and stay with me. when i tried to help figure out what i could do everyone kept telling me that im too young (i have to be 21)Now,when he tried to apply for a visa or tourist visa(to at least come and see me) it really didnt work out as well. When i tried to get one of my family members to sponser him they said no.After that we tried the whole visa, greencard ,and citizenship again and we always keep running out of money. what i think i should do is just fly back to dominican republic and marry him there and bring him back to america.Should I? What should i do?

  1. Call the local immigration office.  Set up an appointment and explain your circumstance.  They will give you the best advice.  Running off and getting married will not help your cause.

  2. you say you are from st. lucia, but what is your status in the u.s. ? if a green card holder it would not do much good to go and marry him in the DR, because he would fall under the 2a visa preference and it would take about 5-7 years to get him here, you don't have to be 21 to petition a spouse. if you are an american citizen then you could have him here within a year.

  3. Actually, getting married WOULD help your cause in the sense that you would be able to petition for him yourself. However, you would also have to prove that you can support him @ 125% the mandated poverty line (which changes all the time but basically means you'd have to earn approximately $20,000 a year plus).

Regardless, I would contact an immigration attorney or an immigration officer for further information. You can also check out:

    www.uscis.org

  4. Since you are not a US citizen, you cannot get someone a fiance visa or sponsor immigration to the US.  He now has a lengthy record of denials of petitions, which makes it harder to get any sort of visa.

If you marry, you are terribly young, and still will not be able to bring him to the US.  You need sufficient income and assets to prove you can support him and guarantee a $30,000 bond.  You could not possibly have a long-enough track record of employment to prove your income is sufficient, reliable, steady.  You have no education, so it is unlikely you can ever qualify for a better job.

And if you are a legal permanent resident, you still get no priority for bringing in a spouse, so it would take 5 years or more before he can actually enter the US.  If you are not a legal permanent resident in the US, you cannot bring in a spouse at all!

You have been wasting your money applying inappropriately, and now he has a long record of denials.  If you go to Dominican Republic and marry him, have him sponsor your immigration there, because he is not coming to the US.

  5. Personally, I think 18 is too young to be getting married. Live, enjoy life, have fun, and then get married.

And be careful. If you get married and try to bring him back to the US, he STILL might not get a green card if they think he's getting married only for the green card.

  6. Maybe if you werent such a racist you could marry American.
