  1. You can ask a cab to give you tour of Vancouver. In about 2 hours you could practically see the entire city. He can arrange it so you won't be late getting back or if there's enough time, he can drop you off so you can double back and do some exploring on your own.

Sightseeing? Stanley park, Van Dusen Gardens, Gastown, Chinatown, Granville Island, UBC to Downtown shoreline beaches, Canada Place

Restaurants? Chinatown/Richmond is very good for Chinese, Sushi - is pretty good everywhere (except for those pre-made take it to go places), Commercial Drive is very good for Greek and Italian, Main or Fraser Street  are good for Indian, Denman street. Yaletown and the Broadway corridor have a good  mix of about eveyrthing.

Sports? Vancouver Canucks are starting their hockey season pretty soon, BC Lions are doing well.

Shopping? Robson Street, Pacific Centre, Metrotown, Oakridge mall, Richmond centre.

In 6 hours you can get a pretty good 'feel' for the city and you'll know what you'll want to see and do when you come back.

  2. if the weather is clear... i'd head over to grouse mountain on the north shore and take gondola up to top.

spectacular views of the city, ocean and surrounding mountains.

If weather is overcast I'd go over to Stanley Park downtown, see the sites of the park (park is Vancouvers most famous landmark really) and the aquarium there in the park is world class.

If your into shopping only.... take a stroll down robson street downtown

  3. If you come via plane, hop in a cab to downtown Vancouver would should only be about a 1/2 hour ride - 45 minutes tops.  By the fare will cost around $20-$30.

If you're a gambler, you can stay near the airport, there's a casino in Richmond which is a suburb of Vancouver.

A quick survey of city and sea is to get dropped off at at the Pan Pacific Hotel.  You can walk along the sea walk towards the entrance of Stanley Park.  You can then head up Denman towards English Bay to get a view of the water then up fashionable Robson Street towards Pacific Center.  Lots of shopping (Vancouver's Rodeo Drive) and coffee shops and plenty to eat.

Vancouver is teeming with fresh sushi.  A fun thing to try is Izakaya which is a Japanese style robata, the latest in thing.  It's home-style Japanese food (no sushi usually) with a bustling atmosphere and servers calling out their orders diner style in loud Japanese.

You can head towards Chinatown to catch dim sum if you're there mid-day at Floata at one of the largest dim sum places on the West Coast of Canada.

Or you can just chill out at Granville Island which is an open air market with plenty of crafts to see, a kid's market for kids and you can even take a little inexpensive 5 minute ferry boat ride to walk around the sea walk on the downtown side of town.  Then walk in fashionable Yaletown which is like Vancouver's Soho.

  4. If you're passing through (airport), probably your best bet is head over to River Rock Casino. There's entertainment, food, drinks. etc and it's close to the airport.

If this isn't an airport layover, I'd say head over to Davie street. Great food, shopping, and a fun place for people-watching.

Historic Gastown is also nice (great photo ops). There are lots of nice gift shops, chocolate stores, etc etc.

  5. Not sure if you're coming in by plane or what, but if you're at the airport, there's not much you can do.  Depending on when you arrive, definitely try for some Chinese food in a restaurant where you see a lot of Asians (avoid those with a lot of Caucasians...).  If you're at the airport, which is in Richmond, there's tons of selections.

If you're in Vancouver itself by car, go up to Queen Elizabeth Park and have a meal at their excellent restaurant, Seasons in the park, which is where the Clinton/Yeltsin summit was held in 1994.  You might fit in Granville Island and maybe a quick trip around Stanley Park (there's a mid-way short cut if you're really pressed for time).  Keep an eye for traffic times (4-6:30) if you need to be somewhere because you might be late.

    Hope this helps...
