  1. Poor you, have you thought of doing something different,I know you say you are a skilled tool maker and drive lorries but just try something else until the job you want come along,at least you will have some income comin in,and your bordom will be relieved keep smiling :-)

  2. Find out if your local Job Centre (or whatever they call it these days), will assist you fincially in going in for your HGV 1, is one possibility.  It may work out a bit expensive if you have to use your mobile phone, but if you have a BT (landline) phone, get out your local Yellow Pages, go to "Engineers" or "Tool Manufacturers and Suppliers", and start off phoning every company there to see if they have any openings, you could actually do this with "Haulage Contractors" too.  I actually done this with firms of solicitors when I got fed up working in London - I got as far as "B", got an interview on the next day, (Thursday), and started working for them on the Monday!

Look up "Employment Consultants/Agencies" and see if you can get any "temp." work driving.  The money may not be that great, but it is surely better than Unemployment Benefit.

If you want a complete change of what you do for a living, enquire with (a) the Job Centre (again), or (b) phone up your local Adult Education Colleges and see what courses are on offer.  You may, again, be able to get assistance for this from the Job Centre.

If you like driving, what about applying to your local Bus Depots - it may be worth finding out if they will put you through your PSV licence or whatever it is you need to drive buses/coaches.

It may not be exactly what you want at this present time, but is it worth looking a bit further afield than just Hertfordshire; the surrounding counties, maybe?

Anyway, there are a few suggestions for you to muse over.

    Good Luck.

  3. I'm in the same situation and its driving me made even though i've only been out of work for 2wks. I'm a forklift driver and I'm on 8 temping agencies and not one of them have any vacancies at the moment. have you tried going on the job centre web page or direct.gov page? they have loads of jobs through temping agencies. if you ring them, you have to keep pushing them to sign you up. also have you tried any of the truckers web pages?  hope this helps.

  4. if all else fails when job hunting, assess what you are good at and what resources you have to hand and set up your own business - its boredom relieving and profitable.  Or take up evening courses to learn new skills, go to a local college or uni to enquire.  I hope you find something soon, good luck.

  5. you can find another job.  As a literate person, you can be versatile that is, you could do another job with another skill instead of being a skilled toolmaker driver.  Their are some jobs that does not require specific skills.  An idle mind is the devils  workshop.

  6. a couple of suggestions that might help.hire a van. put advert in local press.put card in local supermarkets/shops to do any jobs/remove rubbish,do deliverys etc.Or hire a car and do taxi work.dhs will help with training.good luck.
