Question:

What can i do to be the best at Strong Safety?

I'm 14 freshmen and I'm a strong safety......practice has already started and we are trying out for positions.....i really want strong safety and I'm pretty sure ill get it cause there isn't that much competition there.....but just in case what are some things i should know about that position????and i already know some of the basics....i ve been playing football for three years but not safety so i need some tips

  1. You have to be fast, cover and be a run-stopper. You need to be smart and make sure everyone on defense is where they are supposed to be... Other than that, it's not hard just do your job...


  2. you kinda have double duty, though that really depends on your teams defensive philosophy.  Normally SS have to act like CB/LB hybrids.  Make sure you can read the offense for run/pass.  Be fast enough to cover WR's but tough enough to take on TE's and RB's.  Do you know what Cover 2, cover 3 and cover 4 are?  if not, learn it.
