I know they put the ball in scrums and get the ball out of rucks, but what do they do while a play is going on?

  1. Scrum half should follow the ball around the field waiting for the breakdown to occur (ie for ruck or maul to form). You should essentailly be seeing youself as the link between the forwards and backs, so try and position yourself between the two. Work hard on your passing skills as you should be able to pass confidently in both directions, and off the ground. Also keep in mind your ability to run from the base of a ruck, maul or scrum at any time, as by doing this occasionally, you force your opposition to keep an eye on you at all times and reduce the pressure they are able to put on your fly-half. Good luck, and enjoy yourself!

  2. Scrum Half's are doing A LOT on the pitch:

    1.  Following the ball & plays.  Kinda like Harry Potter with the Golden Snitch-You are ALWAYS keeping sight of the ball.  Once you pass the ball out, you are immediately following the person you just passed to in support.

    2.  Directing Traffic.  You're telling your pack players if you want them in or out of rucks & mauls, calling plays for the backline (depending on your team.  Calling back plays are usually for the Fly Half).

    3.  You are the 1st person on the ball AFTER the pack at a breakdown or tackle.  If you get to the ball before anyone else on your team, you're rucking your opposition off the ball & yelling "SCRUMMY's IN!!" so your backs get the ball out.

    3.  You are putting pressure on the opposing scrumhalf when it's your opposition's put in.  By pressure, I mean as soon as you see the scrummy's 2 hands on the ball, you're tackling her & s******g up their opportunity to get the ball out to the backline.

As a scrummy, you need to be quick, think fast on you're feet,  be able to quickly scan the pitch, your opposition & know where your teammates are in order to help the team score.

Fitness?  Yes.  Lots of it.  You will need lots of endurance & be able to get from point A to B QUICKLY.  I say if you have a coach/trainer, get with them on what you will need to do for your endurance & speed.  You will need to hit the weights 3-5 times a week, too.

If you can watch rugby on TV/Cable/your local pub, Do So.  Watch the scrummy.  See what he does.

If/when you play, get someone to videotape it so you can see what things you did well & what things you need to improve on.

If you're in college/high school, jump on ANY players clinics that are sponsored by a Womens team or your area's local union.

    Good luck, & ruck on.
