  1. what keeps you awake? thoughts?

you need a fulfilling day to get to sleep ok. Mental/physical exhaustion is a prime way to fall asleep

  2. i have the same problem, exept i only sleep for about 3 hours a day at about lunchtime.

try having a bath before you sleep and drinking warm milk.

  3. If you have problems going to sleep early, but fall asleep easily later on in the night, you might have a circadian rhythm disorder (such as delayed sleep phase syndrome).

Melatonin is an important hormone that serves to signal your body that it's time to sleep. It is inhibited by light, especially blue light. I recommend avoiding light for several hours before you go to sleep. If necessary, buy glasses that filter it out. Also, you could try to buy a melatonin supplement and take it for a couple months (not long term) to try to get your circadian rhythm back in order.

Another thing I find helps me personally (I have DSPS) is a glass of warm milk and honey (sounds weird but isn't too bad) a little bit before I go to bed. It's also useful to calm you down when you're stressed out. You could try buying this one lotion from Bath and Body Works which has peppermint and something else in it (the name escapes me) and just putting it on your hands. The smell is very relaxing. Also, try listening to some calm music, like classical, and paying attention to your breathing.

If nothing else works, you could always try taking Benadryl or anything else with diphenhydramine. That always puts one to sleep.

  4. What i have tried that seems to help is to try reading something . It tends to make my eyes tired after awhile and then they get heavy making me want to fall asleep

There is something natural you can take called Melatonin. Its sold at health food store. Its very safe and causes you to fall asleep naturally. Its non-addictive . Also I need some backrgound noise. Soft radio, fan going, etc. If you can, try to stay up and go to bed at a usual time such as 11 PM or so. Then get up around 8 AM or whenever you need to. It will be very hard but eventually you can reset your internal clock.

  5. I have had problems going to sleep at night.  Many nights I have stayed up watching movies or listening to music while surfing the internet.  I did notice a pattern that on days when I go running, cycling or swimming, I tend to be much more tired at the appropriate time of the day.

My suggestion for you to fall asleep around 11PM or Midnight is to exercise before eating your dinner.  After dinner you will become tired and eventually fall asleep.

On days when I run I will rehydrate after running.  Then I will prepare dinner or eat dinner depending on who is cooking.  After dinner, I will take a nice warm shower and then I will be ready to sleep.

However on days when I dont exercise I will end up staying awake till 2 or 3 in the morning looking at odd websites on the internet or watching the Travel Channel on Cable TV.

P.S.  Avoid stressful situations.  Depending on the type of person you are, stress can either put you to sleep or make you stay up all night.  I tend to stay up all night if I was stressed the entire day (not if I go running).

  6. It works for me when i listen to calm music (not necessarily classical, but whatever floats ur boat)  and just breath evenly and slowly. In through your nose and out through your mouth. Also, try reading before bed. If it's boring you could doze off, but turn most of your lights off so it doesn't bother you. Sometimes i do that.
