  1. I am an eductaional psyhcologist and thus work with young people who have special needs.

you can get high interest low ability books best to start with them and build your way up. Most libraries have a section on high interest low ability. Books for Dyslexia may also help you at this early stage.

try also the tapes and books and they help you to visiualise the words as they are read on the tape

  2. All the suggestions above are great...Though I have a book I would like to recommend, my sister just read books by Gloria Whelan; also, the book called "pictures in the dark" is great. Really easy to read and SO touching! Enjoy reading...Reading is like my obsession+addiction!

  3. you will need short story books

    but not too short

get books with chapetrs on it. short chapters is good

  4. Go to your local library and talk to the librarians there and they will advise you. I would suggest looking int he children's section and reading suitable books from there.

  5. You need to find a genre that you enjoy reading. Don't force yourself to read things you find boring. This is most people's problem and the reason why so many people don't read. Also, maybe start off with a book of short stories.

  6. you should start by reading short chapter books. thats how i did and you'll just build up if you start there and will become a pretty good reader.

  7. try the Harry Potter books, i've borrowed my daughters and they were a good read and not to complicated. All you need is practise honey.

  8. HI there. Barrington Stoke. These books are in the library. They are written for the older reader (high intrest) but for thoes who find it differcult to read. They print stories and factual books. They are usually in the children sections. Also again in the library there are short stories for adults who have lower reading ability. I can't remember what they are called but they have an orange stripe along the front page and are usually held in the adult section.

Do ask at any library there is someone always happy to help

  9. Another idea is to read simplified English books - that is ones written for those who are learning to speak English. They have all the real great stories - but use a smaller vocabulary.

You can get books on tape and Cd's - so you can listen and read along if you want to.

You could switch the TV to get the captions at the bottom  although these are sometimes very fast.

Also there are brilliant new picture 'comic' books for adults - so you can 'read' the stories and get clues from the pictures.

Good luck to you. All you really need is wanting to find a way!

  10. start with books aimed at young adults, and then as your reading skills improve you can take your pick.

if you have already had a reading test done, maybe you can ask the same person for advice.

  11. I would agree with lisa - go for the books aimed at teenagers.

Most book stores have a section for teenagers, you wont feel quiet as silly if you are seen by your friends and neighbours looking at the Teens section.

  12. Well books that are recomended for 9-10 age groups, and it wont take that long till you advance. My probelem is i'm 34 and cant spell to well,so dont feel bad.
