My horse has fungus in his girth area and its making him very snippy. Whenever I go to touch his stomach or curry / hard brush him there, he pins his ears back, turns around and snaps at me! It's not too bad, but I'd like to try to do something before it gets worse! What can I do?!

  1. Why is your horse all ways wet, keep the area dry and re rig your girth back some so not to rub the sore area

  2. Get a good fungus shampoo (my program usually uses Malaseb or Eqyss), and give him a treatment with it on just the fungus areas every couple of weeks.

However, make sure that you don't bathe him too much or too little. Once a month is good, but no more than that, because--as you probably know--the water/shampoos strip the coat of its natural water-repellents and oils, leaving it more vulnerable to fungus and other skin conditions...And, keep an eye out for areas where fungus forms, and make sure you pay special attention to those areas, as the fungus is a signal that those areas are dirtier and aren't being groomed quite as well as the rest of his body.

Oh, and I would invest in a fleece/sheepskin girth cover in the meantime, just to keep him comfortable.

    Hope this helps!!

  3. Spray the fungus with Listerine, and if the girth is bothering him, stick a couple of Overnight Maxi Pads onto the girth to give him more padding.
