ok some background info: I'm a senior in high school and i just moved to a bigger city so i went from a 2A school to a 5A school.. in my old school i played basketball all last 3 years. I'm 5'8 and I'm not ashamed to say chubby but since it was a small school i played post, guard, and even point guard through the 3 years.. but now since I'm in a 5A school and i know I'm gonna have to try out for the team.. i really want to play guard cuz honesty i think I'm better in that position.. for a guy of my size i have ok handles well at least better than the next big guy..

Ok now the question: I'm trying to slim down and ive been running and i gave up cokes so i can try out for the guard position.. Is there anything else that will help me lose weight??

Another question: when i play with my friends you know just pick-up games i do pretty good like going behind my back and crossing over people and even some nice cuts to the basket. but in real game i kinda freeze up. I'm mean i still score but i don't do what i know i can do.. i guess cuz its a real game there is more on the line and i don't want to mess up... so how can i improve my mental state when I'm on the court???

kinda long...sorry..

  1. ay im on my moms profile n im 14  in my freshman year on varsity. i think i kan help. but anyway weight wize jus do 50 sit ups n 50 squats before you go to sleep u mite b sore but it works trust me im dunkin cus of all dat. also continue ure regular training. n for mental jus go hard. if u mess up on defense make up for it on offense or vice versa

  2. The key to slimming down and losing weight is to burn more calories than you take in. So, plan your daily activities wisely. If you are going to have big meals/eat a lot on a certain day, make sure you do more physical activities and burn off those calories and then some. Running should be fine for burning calories. Try to have an extra session on the treadmill as most of them tell you how many calories you burn. This is the first step towards building mental toughness. If you can lose weight then you have the toughness to do well on the court.

For your second question, I think it's all about confidence. It's harder in real games because people try harder. Don't get discouraged by it and just keep playing hard. Don't let one play mess up your head. The main key for this is confidence. If you have the confidence then you can apply your game into real game situations. Just be confident of your skills and abilities. At the same time, you have to think clearly and always think ahead of the play. If you have the abilities and skills, all you need is the confidence to apply it in game time situations.

For your tryouts, coaches love kids that hustle over kids that try to score or shoot the most. So show them you're a hard worker and you hustle and that you want it. Good luck with tryouts.

One more thing, since you're 5'8" and trying out for a guard position you're going to need to have good handles. This is one of the most important skill to have for guards. Dribble every, do ballhandling drills everyday, and play everyday. It's the only way to improve your handles.

  3. if you freeze up in a real game then you don't believe you are as good as your competition.  you need to watch a lot of basketball games and study how good players play your position. also talk sh*t and get in your opponent's head.  you have to hone your craft and believe that you are the best at it and nobody else.

  4. right to lose weight you need to kickstart your metabolism. you need to eat 6-8 small meals (no bigger than your fist) each day, to compliment the running. Stay away from weights till you have dropped a good amount of weight( otherwise it will make it alot harder to lose).

Second question: as i used to play state for western australia i can totally relate to your problem. i was a post and point guard all the way through till i reached state level. i had to accept that my position was an off guard not the point guard anymore. my advise to you is work on your 3 point game with a vengence.. this will make you a valuable bench player in a close game. im sure you were used to being in the starting 5 at your other school, so this is where your confidence has taken a knock. it is hard to get used to a bench spot, but if your 3 point game is accurate and your ball handling remains solid, there will be a place for you in this team... even if you only get on court at certain times to turn the game around. if you succeeed at this, then your confidence will return as your teammates will appreciate what you came out there and did. GOOD LUCK!!
