  1. The best thing that helped me with my shin splits is stretching and icing A LOT. Also if you are getting them often maybe you should consult a foot doctor to see if there is something else causing them such as flat feet so that you can hopefully prevent them with orthotics   as well as other treatment :)

  2. If you got shin splints from running, then stop running for two weeks.  After you recover, run every other day or if you must run on consecutive days, run 2 or 3 days and then rest one day.  Buy running shoes that provides cushioning.

Otherwise deal with the pain and you will be fine after a week or so.

  3. lots of stretching and rest. the doctor i went to instructed me to stretch by either sitting japanese style for a minute each time (knees in front, feet tucked under your bum) or if your knees can't take it, then just point your toes and hold it down with your hands. you should be able to feel the stretch. ice will help reduce inflammation and will numb some of it anyway. last resort will be analgesics like ibuprofen. or acupuncture.

plus you basically have to ease off any exercise that inflicts impact along the ankle/shin/knee. if you must exercise, swimming or pool running is recommended. when you start your regular exercise routine again, make sure you warm up properly and stretch.
