So, I've been a vegetarian for 2 months now, and have been living off cereal, salad, mozzerella sticks, and other junk. I tried tofu, and hate it, what can i eat that is healthy and has a lot of protein? and what can I eat when i go out to steakhouses with my family?

  1. well at steakhouses you could eat fries or salad

    other stuff

    at home try boca

  2. Lots of Indian recipes are good.  You can actually get all of the essential amino acids you need from vegetable combinations like corn and peas.  Eggs are also a good source of protein.  As for steakhouses, you can always get french fries or ask them to make a salad without the usual meat.  You pretty much won't find anything extremely healthy in a steakhouse (besides the salad, of course).

  3. Babe, what CAN'T you eat as a vegetarian! If you only just became a vegetarian, make it easy for yourself with cooking classes.

It's really important if you're not a confident cook to experiment. It's the only way you learn and it sinks it. Also go to growers markets and stuff... the vegies and fruit are heaps cheaper, you get the best, tasty quality and  you will see all the different stuff. Plus the people selling it and buying it will love to tell you their favorite way of cooking each thing!

My favorite is roast vegetable risotto, a Donna Hay recipe *drool* :)

  4. rice, potatos, beans, grains,  fruits, mushrooms, olives, watermelon, squash, pumpkin, saurkraut, pickles, salsify, swiss chard, ginger, nuts, coconut, eggs!

  5. You can eat grains like bread and pasta, beans, nuts, all veggies and fruit, boca burgers, rice and the thousands of dishes that can made from these items.  Did you consider looking up vegetarian versions of your favorite foods?

  6. You did not prepare your tofu correctly.  It takes on the flavor of the seasonings you use.  I like to use plenty of finely chopped onion, and minced garlic.  It can taste great.  You can stir fry it too, with green peppers.  Have you tried Boca burgers or Garden Burger's Chik patties?  They are good.  Sprinkle a hint of garlic on before cooking.  You can use both in spaghetti, chili, tacos- you name it.  At the steak house, I usually get the salad and load it with all the things I love (egg, cheese, chopped olives, cukes, tomatoes, lettuce- topped with my favorite dressing) along with cottage cheese and pineapples on the side.  Get a baked potato and a slice of garlic bread.  You will be full and satisfied.

Spaghetti w/meatless sauce, spinach, mushroom or cheese stuffed ravioli, and vegetable lasagna are very good.  Try a place that sells a humus sandwich or a Portabella mushroom sandwich.

Also, go to Border's or any other book store and look at some vegetarian magazines.  You will lots of ideas.

  7. You can eat eggs.. They are great source of protein and very filling. though after eating a lot of them it gets old.. just like anything will. Try oatmeal instead of Cereal. Eat fresh fruits. Ask at the steakhouse if they have GARDEN burgers? These are Vegetarian Friendly.. but its hard to say if they have them so you might be eating another salad... Good luck!
