What does he do outside of Aikido?

For my shidoshi's last birthday, the class got together and got some cash together to put toward a shotgun he wanted.

Point is, a great way to approach a birthday gift for a teacher can be to find out what his -other- interests are (that is, to show a personal interest in him, not just what he does for you), and get the whole class together on it.
