  1. One of the best ways to improve reading is to read! Find books, magazines and websites about a topic that interests you (sports, entertainment, cars, etc.) and read them. Try re-reading the same article or chapter 2 or 3 times to improve your ability to recognize words and understand what you've read. It can also help to have a dictionary (or dictionary.com) nearby to look up words you don't know. Remember, reading should be fun, not something you have to do for school. Good luck!

  2. First let me say that you are not alone. There are many individuals like you. You do not say if you are in college or work force. There are a few things you can do.

    1. Look for the adult literacy organization in your area. They have tutors that maybe able to help you.

    2. Go to the public library and pick out a book. I typically suggest that you pick something you are interested in and read the book to the best of your ability. Using the computer or a piece of paper write down the words you do not know as you come to it. Then go to electronic dictionary on the internet (http://www.m-w.com/) you can hear the word. You can also use http://visual.merriam-webster.com/ they may have a picture of the word you don't know.

    3. Using the words you don't know you can also use http://thesaurus.reference.com/ to find a different word to place in the text for the word you do not know.

    4. If you prefer to go high tech to support you can download a free program called Please Read from http://www.readplease.com/ . The program is very basic but you can pay for the upgrad if you want more features or it to work in all your computer programs. You can cut and paste the information you want to hear into the box, click read and the program reads the text back to you. The reason this supports reading is that you can see what the text says as you follow along.

There are other programs on the market. If you would like to know about other tools, please feel free to contact me. I use a text to speech program to support my reading.

  3. Practice, practice.

You already took an important step.

    You want to learn more.

The more you read the more you will comprehend.  The more words you know   the less you have to think about what they mean, the faster you will read.  By reading and knowing most words in common every day use, you will actually be speed reading.

    Our little secret.

Here is a excellent, now for free, program    for your computer.  I would not want to be without it.

    www.answers.com

Install it, and try out all its functions and you will be wiz.

  4. Go onto the Amazon website (or see if you local library will lend you one) & order a book called 'Toe by toe'. it's a book that helps dyslexic people learn to read & spell.

It is quite basic (obviously) and teaches you reading & writing in very small stages, smaller than step by step, hence the title, 'Toe by toe'. ;-)

  5. Hi, I have found using books on tape/cd with the book helps alot. Most library's can help match the book to tape. There is a wide range of children books that come with the tape/cd for a small charge.

Your local library also holds books that are for adults like yourself just ask. There are alot of adult classes around for people who are late learners.

You are are not alone and good luck, you have done the hardest bit by asking for help.

  6. if theres's not a teacher get a friend that can help you you can't do it on your own. Electronic toys are for beginners instead of that there are reading books with tape records at some libraries

  7. You have written a question far more correctly than many questions and answers that appear in Yahoo answers. Perhaps your earlier problem was lack of interest and practice. I wouldn't think electronic learning toys would be appropriate. Get a book on a subject that interests you and read it, accepting that you won't read it very quickly, Persevere and then get another one. And if you can understand what I have written, you don't have too much of a problem because i am not writing down to you.

    Best of luck.
