Why not a jar of marbles

heat is when you shake ty

he bottle

when very cold

all the molcules settle to the bottom of the jar

and act like a crystal  they form a lattice

if you rock the jar

from side to side gently

it is similar to adding heat

albiet a small amount

and the marbles

roll over each other

break the crystal pattern

and act like a liquid

if you add a lot more energy

shake the jar violently

the marbles jump

randomly

around the container

hit each other and the wall

they act like a gas

this is similar to the reality of nature at a submicroscopic level
