This year we grew two enormous cabbages. Grant it we are a family of 7 but we have absolutely no idea what we can make with them. We have already made cole slaw, sauerkraut and cabbage rolls/stuffed cabbage. and i really need to know what else to make with this cabbage before it goes bad.

  2. Simple keilbasa and cabbage soup--it was a staple in our house growing up.

1 ring of keilbasa, cut into 1 inch pieces

2 or 3 potatoes peeled and cut into bite size pieces

    1/4 to 1/2 cabbage sliced

    2 tbl tomatoe paste

    bay leaf

    red pepper flakes to taste

water to barely cover ingredients. Bring to gentle boil. When potatoes are done, taste for seasonings add any needed salt, black or red pepper. Remove bay leaf and serve.

  3. My family loves fried cabbage.

In skillet fry 4 pieces of bacon when done take out of skillet to drain.

Leave 2tablespoons of oil in pan and cut up cabbage and 2 tablespoons of sugar.Crumble up bacon and add.  Put the lid on the pan and cook until tender. keep an eye on it and stir occasionally.

    Everyone loves this tasty dish.

  5. What about a big pot of Cabbage Soup?

It's just like vegetable soup only with cabbage added.

Normally I would use about a 1/2 of a head, but if your cabbages are all that big, maybe 1/4 head would be enough.

You can always make a lot and freeze it for the winter, I have frozen cabbage soup before and it tasted great after it was thawed and reheated!

  6. you can make braised cabbage with bacon and apples or sweet cabbage soup.

  7. I, too, am a cabbage fan!  Here are some of my favorite dishes:

    1. Chinese Chicken Salad:  6 cups shredded cabbage; 2 boneless, skinless chicken b*****s, seasoned, cooked and cubed; 2 packages Top Ramen noodles (reserve seasoning packet for another use); 1 bunch green onions, chopped; 2 T toasted sesame seeds; 1/2 cup vegetable oil; 3 T sesame oil; 3 T Rice Wine Vinegar; 1 T sugar.  Mix oils with vinegar and sesame seeds.  Add salt and pepper to taste.  In large mixing bowl, add cabbage, chicken, croken ramen noodles and chopped green onion.  Toss with dressing and sesame seeds and cover. Refrigerate for several hours before serving.

    2.  Prawn Tacos with slaw:  1 lb large prawns, shells removed; 2 cups shredded cabbage; 1 cup shredded carrots; 3 chopped green onion; 12 small flour tortillas; 1/2 cup tarter sauce; 1 T red pepper sauce; 1 T grated asiago cheese; 1 clove minced garlic; 1 cup Italian salad dressing.  Marinate prawns in salad dressing for several hours.  Mix together tarter sauce, red pepper sauce, garlic, cheese and chopped green onion.  Blend 1/4 cup with cabbage and shredded carrots.  Remove prawns from marinade and grill until cooked thru.  To serve, place several prawns in each tortilla along with slaw.  Drizzle with remaining sauce and serve.

    3.  Vegetable Soup

    4.  Corned beef, noodles and cabbage

    5.  Braised cabbage in beef broth with mustard

    6.  Sausages and mashed potatos (mix cooked cabbage in with potatos and season with butter, salt and pepper)

    7.  Apple and jicama coleslslaw with poppyseed dressing

    8.  Pork Roast in braised cabbage with onion and brown sugar

    9.  Stuffed cabbage leaves baked with rice, ground beef and tomato sauce.

  8. Hungarian Noodles and Cabbage. Thinly slice up a head of cabbage (a normal size head is good for 2-4 servings) and cook it in lots of butter with a little salt and pepper in a frying pan. Add a teaspoon or two of sugar to help it caramelize. Cook it a LONG time (I can cook a regular size head of cabbage down to a ball about the size of my fist!) - at least a half hour.

Boil up egg noodles. Drain them, throw them back in the pot, throw the cooked cabbage in with more butter. Serve it up. The cabbage becomes almost sweet and won't taste like anything you've had before.

  9. soup

  10. I grew up on this meal- it was one of my father's favorites:

    New England Boiled Dinner

Boil one ham in a large pot of water

When ham is done, remove and cut in bite size pieces

Add potatoes that have been peeled and cut into equal pieces

Add cabbage that has been cut into pieces the same size as the potatoes

    Add peeled, chopped carrots

When potatoes, cabbage and carrots are done, add ham back to pot.

    Serve hot!
