  1. Unless you lie there is no good thing to say about the United Nations.

  2. Really.. What CAN you say?

  3. the question you have to ask about the UN when defending it is , if not the UN, then what?

the UNs most high-profile agencies are not as successful as they could be, but the work that the UN has done in terms of reducing poverty, protecting children, and reducing the impact of epidemics such as those of malaria and HIV/AIDS has been impressive.

look beyond what you see in the headlines. the agencies of the most merit are those that do their work without anyone knowing and without claiming credit.

  4. Ok, this answer may be long... but here it goes (by the way, the people who are against the UN are probably American. They are somehow brainwashed into hating the UN. I have learned this on my trips to visit family in Florida).

Affter WWI, the UN was established as a way of building a host of different organizations to help various countries around the world that are suffering. Be it through political conflict, famine, poverty, etc. They created several programs intended to reduce, as much as possible, all the factors leading to outbreaks an conflicts. These programs did not only focus on peace keepers, who intervene after a conflict has erupted, but also on economic and social developments, human rights, and the struggle to end world poverty and hunger. Contributing to something everyone wants - peace.

The UN is part of organizations such as UNICEF, UNFPA, and the World Health Organization (WHO). The WFP (World Food Program) uses food aid to support economic and social development.

Hunger and poverty are two important factors in the outbreak of conflicts.

As for peace keeping missions, there are countries benefiting from the UN where there is a loss of justice and services in place to ensure those who commit these conflict are brought to justice. After a conflict is solved, and a society is in shambles, the UN is a key factor in providing peace keepers to help rebuilt a system where justice is served. The UN is therefore working to equip itself with the effective institutions needed to fill the institutional void in countries that are rebuilding after war. If this is not done, the horrible actions committed by certain individuals during these conflict will never be brought to justice.

Those that are opposed to the UN do not realize the importance of it. It ensures peace in a world that is full of greed, violence, poverty, and suffering. It ensures food for those who do not have it, peace for those living in turmoil, and protection for those living in constant fear. Those who don't understand the work of the UN don't understand how great the countries that contribute to this organization are... that INCLUDES the USA. The US is one of the seven main nations that help people all over the world every day. That  makes me wonder why on Earth the people of the US are so opposed to it.

Maybe it is because the UN ensures that no other country can go in and manipulate and use another (weaker) society for their own benefits. It is a union that ensures its members can not enter another on union country and use its wealth and powers to harm or take advantage of that country.

  5. You might mention the Intrnational Criminal Court and peacekeeping roles in Cambodia and East Timor for a start.

  6. A solid argument in favor of the UN? One word, UNICEF.

  7. Marieann! There is nothing that can be said for the United Nations except that from the day of it's inception, it has bleed the pockets of the United States taxpayer and all to no avail supposedly in the name of humanity. It has supported one crooked regime after another and caused great suffering throughout the world! For examples look around you at Africa, the middle East, Korea,Cuba, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran! Need I say more?

  8. Not much, good luck with that. The UN is a blight on the world. They are anti-Semitic and anti-American. They are incapable of accomplishing much of anything positive in the world. It always seems that the UN Peacekeepers are being accused of abuse and rape.

  9. The UN is like a corrupt cop: it stays bought.  Hussein's bribes, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, kept it from taking action against the Iraqi regime; it fell to GWB to do what had to be done.  The UN's inaction in Bosnia, Darfur, and Georgia are legendary.  Oh dear, I was supposed to show a positive influence?  I'll have to think about that...

  10. You could say absolutely nothing. THE UN is useless and a waste of money.

To the CMB person who says the UN is anti Semitic, the UN created Israel.

  11. The UN provides food for poor countries and provides peace keepers in certain locations. They give those countries that normally wouldn't have one a voice.

  12. It is located in the greatest city on the planet.  The building is pretty, no on second thought, I will stick with NYC being the greatest city.  Other than that I'm fresh out of ideas.
