I disagree with the answer that when couples don't register somewhere, it usually means they just want money.  My fiance and I aren't registering because we don't want to ask for gifts (plus we've been living together for four years now and don't really need anything).  We are not expecting to receive money.  If someone gives us gifts, I know I would rather prefer an actual gift rather than money.  It's more fun that way, and you might get something surprising and unexpected.

Some things that I think would make good gifts are towels, sheets (if you know their bed size), gift cards to a home or hardware store (like Bed, Bath, and Beyond or The Home Depot) or to a restaurant, a date night kit (my friend got one for her wedding- it included a Blockbuster gift card, some candy and popcorn, and some other small things I can't remember- I thought it was a cute idea), kitchen gadgets (a new coffee maker, a smoothie maker, etc.), something nice for their yard, etc.  You really could go any way you want with this, but if you know them well, try to get something you know they're interested in (for example, if you know they love a certain sports team, maybe you can get them some engraved sports stuff like glasses or whatever).  Sorry I can't be of more help!

Show me the money! A gift card would also be nice. It could be to a store that has household goods, or it could be to a bed and breakfast for later on. Almost anything goes.  If you know where they are going for a honeymoon, you could provide a meal at their hotel or for some kind of recreation there.

You can give the couple money, gift certificate for a nice restaurant.  It may sound stupid but a gas gift card can be helpful for all their traveling.  If you know if they are going on a honeymoon, you find out through the resort if you can give them a gift certificate for a treatment down there.

Towels.  People can always use them. Its pretty pricy once you buy 2 of the Bath,Hand and Washcloths.  Stick with a neutral color, but not white.

Most people I know just let you know their room colors and dont make a list, unless they are registered somewhere.

This would depend a lot of if they already both live in apartments too.  If they dont need much. Money works.    Could be cheaper than a gift actually. Wrapping paper isnt cheap either

How well do you know them? And do you know if they are in need of anything? I would consider something practical first and then fun second.

The best thing would be either cash or a gift certificate. If you do want to buy a present something for their home is best. Just make sure it isn't too "different" and will suit their decore. If you do buy a gift DO NOT take it to the wedding, the best thing is to have it delivered to them prior to the day, they don't want to be carrying around gifts on their wedding night.
