Try live/dead bait. Big Northerns like suckers (no pun intended) whether they are swimming or dead.

Well, to get them like they get them on tv, you've got to have hours upon hours of footage and someone who knows how to edit it down to the relavent half hour or hour. At least that's how it works for reds...
