  1. They have high wheeled mowers

  2. To effectively produce hay, you need to first cut it and lay it in windrows using a disc mower or sickle as already mentioned. But you also need to let it dry for a while before it can be baled without rotting. And while it's drying, you need to use a tedder. This will turn and "fluff" the hay to ensure the moisture is removed. Then you need a baler. It's a lot of hard work making and baling hay!

If you just want to cut it and then collect it, then use a field and brush mower. It's a wheeled mower with a big trimmer head in lieu of a blade. There are also some walk behind sickle bar mowers out there that are very effective for that sort of thing..

  3. scissors

  4. Whipper Snipper....(Brush Cutter)

  5. check with a farmer in your area and see if they have a sickle mower or disc mower that mounts on a tractor.  that way you can bale it for hay.

  6. You need a scythe, its a hand tool. Its hard work but if its sharp you can cut easily through thick long grass. They use them to cut through sugar cane. Wiki has some info.

  7. Use a shredder blade.

  8. a string trimmer (weed wacker) will cut the base but it will take a very long time!! i have seen those commercials for a DR trimmer thing that would work, or you could get one of those old school scythe things, but good luck!!  ask a nearby farmer to borrow his tractor and hay cutter
