What can i use to help sudden joint pain?

Hi my boyfriend's shoulder and elbow joints have suddenly just started hurting really badly and we don't know how to ease the pain or what even caused it! We tried a heat rub called 'Transvasite' but he had an allergic reaction and is now covered in redness which may develop into a rash. Can anyone suggest anything to help? Thanks
