  1. evapoative cooling

  2. i go nekked it help

  3. People used iced tea before air conditioners.

  4. stand fans actually use a lot less power than air conditioning.  I live in Malaysia and it's so warm, but electric bills are really high so most people have a large stand fan instead of using air conditioning and there really is a dramatic difference in the amount of power used between them.

Also, keeping your curtains closed through the day really helps especially if your house gets alot of sunlight causing it to be extremely warm.  Although having closed curtains might not be the best option aesthetically, it helps with the temperature and because it's still light outside there should still be enough light shining through the curtains to work in, without using an additional lamp or ceiling light.

  5. In front of the fan have a big bowl of ice.  It really helps to cool the air the fan is blowing.

  6. fans with water pouring out to make it a nice little spray or the design of the house because tiles can keep you cold or a vent to get rid of hot air

  7. design.

The room or house ,should have a hole at the highest point ,

To let the hot air escape.

Then make a hole in the wall at the lowest part ,on an outside wall that is in the shade and has an airflow.

this is where the coldest air is ,the resulting draft will replace the warm air for colder air.

To make it colder have some wet plants ,or a wet cloth in front of the hole and you will have replaced your air conditioner ,

    Cheaply and mainly by design.

on very hot days you can hang a wet curtain on a open window in the shade ,and this will cause cool air to go in ,but you will always need the hole at the highest point to make a draft

we used to cool beer down in the sticks by hanging them in a wet bag ,from a branch in the wind.

  8. One of the most important things used was an awning to protect the windows from sun.

A small fan to move air from the top part of the room (upper floor if multiple-story)  and push it out of the house, letting air enter via a cellar window, is a great move.

If you have a panel that gives access to the roof crawl space mounting the fan (like a bathroom exhaust fan) in the panel works well... it not only takes air from the top of the  living space, it also forces air out of the roof crawl space.

When using a fan to move air, move the air at the coolest time of day, just before sunrise.

  9. ummm, are you in Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, or ?????

if it's dry where you are, a swamp cooler might work well.

lacking that, a window air conditioner might be better.

fans work up to a point, but eventually blowing hot air doesn't help much.

  10. Wet cloths tied around you neck, fans, when it is cooler inside, keep the house shut tight - including window treatments to keep out the sun, when it is cooler outside, open everything up and put the fans in the window - one side of the house blowing in, and the other side blowing out.
