I am very new to knitting but have been finding more and more patterns using double pointed needles. When I went to buy some today the lady in the shop said they had been replaced with circular needles so I bought a pair.

What can I make on them that is very quick and easy?

I was under the impression that with dpn you could knit a tube-can this be done with circular needles?

Do they make tubes too?If so.................how????

As you can see Im well and truly lost lol!!!

Fellow knitters please help:)))))

Many thanks in advance!

  1. Socks. Otherwise circular needles are used to knit large items like afghans.

  2. Circular needles can be used to make a tube, a seamless sweater, and is used when knitting the neckline on a sweater.  There are various lengths to accommodate the number of stitches cast on.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Circulars can come in lengths from 8 inches (hard to find in stores but can be ordered online) to even 30 inches so a lot can be made on them.

I use my 8" circs for sleeves on sweaters, socks (which is actually easier on dpns), hats...

Ones a little larger are good for hats, sweater bodies, tube scarfs...

The large ones are great for working afghans.  Instead of working in the round, you turn it each row and knit normally as if you have 2 needles going, only you can fit a lot more on them.

  4. It depends on the length of you circular needles. By the way the person at the shop is full of it. DPN's are not replaced by circulars. For example if you use a circular needle to knit a hat you still need dpn's when you get to the top and you decrease. You would just use the same size dpn's as circular needles.

You can also use circular needles for any project you would use single pointed needles for. In fact my friend uses them exclusively because they don't force you to hold up the entire weight of the piece you are working on. Try it and see.

  5. theres lots you can use circular needles for like baby jerseys. particularly good for fairisle. and yes you can make tubes. it's a matter og going round in circles. go get patterns

  6. I am currently making a round babies shawl on circular needles.  Started with three stitches on two deouble pointed and four on the third, gradually increasing until too many for double pointed and went to a circular.  You can make socks, gloves and hats
