I got a bachelors in Portuguese and I've had experience teaching ESL students. but i really want to re focus my self to helping higher needs students.

What kind of training would be required to complete in order to end up in a Special Ed program as a teacher?

so do i need regular teacher certification, and if so is there usually programs to hire and gain certification within 2 years?

and any other info you think i should know would be much apriciated.

  1. You don't need a regular ed. certification, but need certification in Special Education from an accredited university. You can also start out with an emergency certification, but I would suggest getting certified in a Special Ed. Generalist program. It will allow you to work with students 5-21, all levels of needs. Check your state website, as well. You can get a Masters in Special Ed. in 2 years, with certification. The fact that you are already certified ESL is great and a huge benefit to you. What about Title 1? best of luck.

  2. you can get a masters degree in special ed in 2 years....some areas still have alternate route which allow you to work while you get your masters..

for now you could work as a teachers aid
