  1. Absolutely nothing.

The more we s***w with natural order the more we s***w it up.  Humans may believe they were made in the image of God, but that does not give them the right to play God.  We aren't even close to understanding the complex relationships within nature, how could we hope to repair them?

What's most interesting is the Lowland Gorilla is threatened now by the E. Bola virus.  Not only are we reducing biodiversity by cutting down old growth forests, we are releasing viruses that we haven't come in contact with in many, many years.

  2. There are many conservation organizations that acquire and manage open space areas and buffer zones throughout the world, groups like The Nature Conservancy, The Wilderness Society, The Trust for Public Land, and so on.  Habitat loss, habitat degradation and invasive species are the primary threats facing all wildlife today.  We cannot halt the process that leads to extinction cold, but we can assist organizations like the above in ensuring that important links of land that are facing development, inholdings, and so forth are acquired and preserved for posterity.

Several years ago I visited the Coachella Valley Preserve, lands set aside to provide habitat for the fringe-toed lizard.  They saved quite a bit of land but this guy likes active sand dunes, and there were some miscalculations back when on protecting enough land in areas that provide sand for the Preserve.  So it's an imperfect process, but a hopeful one.

If you can't help financially these organizations often need volunteers. The 14th annual National Public Lands Day is coming up on Sept. 29.  This is America's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands we enjoy. In 2006,100,000 volunteers built trails and bridges, planted trees and plants, and removed trash and invasive plants.

It feels good, you meet cool people, and you help protect lands that maintain healthy stands of biological diversity throughout the country.

Many people throughout the world are doing good things on behalf of the environment.  Hopefully you'll find a way to help, so you won't feel so helpless.

  3. There are lots and lots of things we can do to stop biodiversity from disappearing. BUT not what you will want to do.

The best thing you can do is to be as self sufficient as you can on your own land/garden in terms of producing your own food, fuel and dealing with wastes. Have a high yield system. Limit your consumption of everything else from flying to buying consumer goods and limit the size of your family. Less exploitation of the environment's finite resources and other people.

Then leave the rest of the wilderness alone. Don't try to save it, don't interfere with it. The natural system has it's own checks and balances, it heals itself, it self controls populations much better than anything man has ever achieved.

  4. as individuals we can't do more than make adjustments to our own lifestyles and ask politicians to advocate for solutions. Some of the solutions are:

    - a moratorium on land clearing

    - solutions to climate change  - aka reducing and sequestering

    - improved farming practices including perennial pastures

    - less worldwide distribution of the typical monoculture grain crops and more recognition of the existing spp in different regions around the world.
