What can students claim back on tax?

im a full time uni student and what to know what sort of things i can claim on tax like text books computer etc. I am working part time not related to uni but do get a study allowance from the goverment which i pay tax on so can i claim under that becuase i pay tax even though its not related to work.. thanks

  1. Nothing. Didly squat!

    You can only claim an expense as a deduction against income if the expense is directly incurred to earn that income. You don't "earn" government welfare/study benefits and you can't claim your study expenses as deductions against that income. Just because you pay tax on assessable income doesn't mean a nexus is created between the expense and the income.


  2. I agree with the answer by Miss Shocking.

    (Oh dear).  There is little or nothing you can claim in respect to Uni or even less. The ITAA provides only for self education in respect to employment. It does not relate to employment so you can claim nothing. Well less than nothing.

    However, in relation to your employment part time or otherwise, let me say this...

    "All losses and outgoings to the extent to which they are incurred in gaining or producing assessable income.......... shall be an allowable deduction except to the extent that they are private, domestic or capital in nature."

    Enough said
