  1. a V1 engine.

  2. Go find an online forum about Lotuses or English cars. I'd say probably a turbocharger or supercharger. High performance exhaust, intake. Also you can probably get adjustable springs/coilovers and adjust the height. If you're serious about getting more performance out of it, take out the spare tire and put a lightweight battery in. Take out the passenger seat, A/C, stereo system, power windows, power seats, and carpet. If it's an automatic, see about converting it to manual. You can port and polish the cylinders, shave down the piston rods to save some weight, although that takes some know-how. Don't forget better brakes. Lightweight flywheel, maybe a camshaft better suited for high speeds. Also, brake fluid with a higher boiling point. That's all I can think of right now. You should probably know what you're doing, especially on a Lotus.

  3. Well, are you taking about completely relacing the existing engine, drivetrain, etc or just beefing up the existing car?

Now, the lotus elise is already well powered for it's size, it should do 5.9 seconds 0-60. This is very respectable. It is the tradtional Lotus mantra of weight first, horsepower second.

The engine that came in the US versions is the Toyota 1.8 liter DOHC motor. This motor is really strong as is, but it can be improved, what the core factor in "improvement" is the pricetag. There aren't many cheap bolt-on improvements, but if you give us a better idea of budget, then a better response will follow.

Now, if you have a carcass on hand, and you want to put some other engine into it...well, measure the engine bay. Almost everything will fit a bowtie motor, but, in the realm of the Elise, I can't imagine that you could find an alternate motor that would perform better.

Remember, it's not always HP, it's HP to weight and handling.
