What can we do to change the country?

I'm sixteen, and I've just finished reading Thomas Paine's Common Sense for a school assignment. It seems like a lot of the events and problems that were occurring in the 18th century are happening again, today. There are too many people in the country, and the government isn't doing it's job. We must be headed towards drastic changes like those that Paine was trying to invoke. Is there anything we, as individual people, can do to change the direction of things? Or do we just let it all train wreck?
